The U.S. Navy has awarded HII multiple contract modifications totaling approximately $142.9 million to support the completion of Pre-Commissioning Unit John F. Kennedy (CVN 79), the second Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier.

What Are the Details of the PCU John F. Kennedy Contract Modifications?

The Department of Defense said Friday the company received a $60 million cost-reimbursable modification, a $58.56 million cost-plus-incentive-fee change, a $20.92 million fixed-price-incentive firm target modification and a $3.44 million cost-plus-fixed-fee adjustment. The contract actions aim to finalize unpriced change orders and enhance the capabilities of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier upon delivery.

HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding division will conduct work at its facility in Newport News, Virginia. The work is expected to be finished by June 2026. The Naval Sea Systems Command, which awarded the modifications on Nov. 19, did not allocate funds at the time of award.

What Was HII’s Initial Contract for CVN 79?

HII was initially awarded a $3.35 billion contract in June 2015 to provide detailed design and construction services for the CVN 79. The company also booked a $941 million contract modification to continue procuring materials and manufacturing components for the carrier. Under these contracts, HII was tasked with carrying out a range of activities, including research studies, engineering, design and related development efforts; detailed design and material procurement; construction; life-cycle support; and the provision of logistics and other essential data.
